Feel free to use this area to discuss anything and everything about the Little 500 — Qualifications, Spring Series, the race itself.

Please, no character attacks. Trash-talking is great, but slandering people isn’t. Let’s keep it clean. Or your post will be deleted.

  1. only regret is that we ever had your sorry ass on the team to begin with.

quiter’s mentality in college -> quiter’s mentality in life

    see ya never

    • You forgot to mention that State used Kenda tires that have been discontinued. They are virtually unavailable (Kenda is out). I did find some on-line at BikeInn.com. But they are in Spain. Good luck for your spare wheels on race day. We’ll probably see yet another tire change in 2025.

  2. teams staying in bloom for break are clowns A week on the track is waste of break compared to Fort Lauderdale or anyone away from this shitty Midwest town Just live a bit and get tf off the bike for once fucking try hards

    • bigger loser: ‘try hards’ in town on break gettin better or the guy spending his time in ft laudy bad mouthing those riders instead of ‘living a bit’ with whatever sexually depraved group of guys he went on a trip with? sounds like bikes are on ur brain wherever u go champ

  3. love how the backup tire for the race is a completely different tire from a completely different brand that is catigorically better. the rules for its use is also an entire grey area. Easily could have just picked another Kenda tire that was actually in stock and available for local bike shops to begin with. We deserve an explanation.

  4. Emily’s Fault?

Did she mandate a specific tire, shocking small team budgets in 2013? Did she decide on State Bicycle and not include, among other things, a contract clause to ensure that State chose tires that were widely available due to the tire mandate. (see above)

As one person put it, Emily has had to navigate a minefield of ill-informed decisions of her 3 predecessors. He used an explicative in place of “ill-informed”. She has done a commendable job in challenging situations and having to fil in years of needlessly created potholes. That alone, would be a full-time job.

Emily Carrico differs from those prior RD’s in that she actually cares about the riders who have been ignored for over a decade now.

      • instead of trolling Emily, stop for a minute and think. L5 riders are living the dream made possible by Emily, IUSF volunteers (including RC) and those who have come before. The race is at times an inconvenient tradition for IU, but is the envy of schools across the country, many of which have tried and failed to get something similar started. Next time you see Emily or a volunteer, look them in the eyes and thank them for their part in making this happen for you.

  5. One lap of the track, .25 miles, is equivalent to about 1320 feet. The average untrained human can throw a baseball at least 45 miles per hour.

If we space 26 people out every 50 feet on the track, throw a garmin to each other around the track at 45 miles per hour (taking into account it takes time to catch, reset, and throw it to the next person), I believe we could beat the current track KOM of 30.9mph.

We may also be able to fudge the turns of the track by cutting the corners and simply throwing across the field from T1-T2 and T3-T4

Seeing that the track is becoming slower and slower as the years pass, we may never see another 30.9mph lap again. This is the only way

    • Based on a metric that seems to have traction with some teams here goes for Women

      1. Teter
      2. DG

Field sprint: Theta, Novus, Sigma Kappa, ADPi

These 6 teams have been issued a combined total of 47 coaching credentials.

Men seem to have not fully embraced this strategy

      Field Sprint

Cinzano; Chi Phi, Delts, Sigma Nu

These 4 teams have been issued a combined total of 24 coaching credentials.

    • Novus Men with Coaching Credentials

      • AGD
  7. Which teams train the most yet always seem to underperform? Or which teams train the least but consistently perform well?

  8. beta sig and sae are on cease and desist by the university which restricts all frat activities. this includes intramurals. how can they participate in little 5?

  9. Why are suspended fraternity houses in the Little 500 this year? That has not been allowed in previous years.

Race rules state that only organizations in good standing are permitted to field a team. SAE and Beta Sig are not in good standing as they both were placed on ‘cease and desist’ status this year for hazing.

    • The University has yet to rule on their suspensions. Until they do, they are technically not suspended.

This was the situation with DChi a few years ago. Their rulling came after the race.

      Tom

      • Appreciate the explanation Tom.

It doesn’t sit well with me though.
First, only organizations in good standing with IU are eligible. Frats on CnD are not in good standing as they can’t have parties, rush, take a pledge class, intramurals, etc. L5 is a big deal at IU and it seems like a privilege you lose if you find yourself on CnD if you lose the other privileges.

Second, the actions taken to fund, support and enter a bike team would themselves be a violation of the CnD mandate issued by IU. Putting together a bike team is not ceasing and a violation of CnD.

Lastly, let’s not forget we are having this discussion re: hazing violations. Allowing a frat to promote itself via L5 gives it an advantage over other houses with recruiting new members to haze..I mean rush. And, it feels like IU is not taking hazing seriously if it allows a house on CnD for hazing to ride (and maybe win) and then use that to recruit new members.

      • I totally agree, however, they are innocent until proven guilty. SAE & BetaSig can make one stupid mistake and force IU’s hand. The is their move, (The Corleones are still fesh in my mind.)

I believe they can appeal the ruling. I think that is what D-Chi did, now that I think about it. Their appeal got taken cre of after the race. The Beta;s got screwed, no one told them about the appeals process, the concluded they were out,

So it could be that these guys are appealing, that could keep them in until the appeal is ruled on. It’s all tricky.

        Tom

      • nah he cares about the race. it would be an embarrassment for a house on CND to win the race.

    • Clearly you have a strong bias against Greek teams. I don’t know why you would want to thin out the field just because something “doesn’t sit right with you”. CnD is a very tricky and complex situation for every house that is on it. At the end of the day, most CnD charges have nothing to do with the bike teams and are purely related to single issue internal problems with the houses themselves. The guys on fraternity bike teams biggest nightmare is getting their whole season ruined because some “brother” got in a fight at a party or someone does something stupid to a new member. That’s what the whole appeals process is for. Also, the fact that you think L5 is purely a tool for fraternities to promote themselves and get new kids to haze shows how little you understand about Greek life / Greek teams. You should try to actually have some respect for the other athletes on the field rather than praying on their downfall. As an alumn you should know how special being able to participate in L5 is. The last thing any honest competitor wants is for their competition to be taken out

      • I know how fraternities, bike teams and L5 work. I was in a house that hazed and had a bike team every year. I really can’t believe IU has not rooted hazing out yet. These houses are not on CnD because of a one-off fight, rather they are on CnD because they have line-ups and haze, and if they got caught doing so they should lose their bike team in the year they got caught at a minimum. Otherwise, IU is allowing them to be promoted by L5.
Losing the privilege to field a team would help stop hazing. Frats care about not being part of the L5 festivities, and being a house without a bike team, pair and L5 parties the prior year would hinder recruitment and be a disincentive to haze.
No one is feeling sorry for riders in these houses. How about not riding for a team that is in trouble for hazing year after year? SAE and Beta Sig have been in trouble for hazing nearly every year since 2019. It’s really simple: want to ride? Stop having line-ups. If you want a bike team don’t be a house that hazes. If you are a rider don’t ride for houses that haze.

      • OP is arguing that haze, ride in L5, haze, ride in L5, rinse and repeat is not okay. i agree. it shades the event and sends the wrong message.

don’t try to equate being on cnd for hazing, year after year, to a fight at a party or “doing something stupid to a new member”. if you’ve ever lived in a house that hazes ya know that every member knows exactly when and where the line-ups will occur so they can get girls and others out of the house. if you are a rider getting your girlfriend out of the house, you are complicit. also, your response assume riders don’t haze. they do

      • I hope BKB and Cutters work together to lap the field and ensure that the evil Greek houses are shown the power of righteous living. I bask in the knowledge that no independent team associates in any way with bad actors or impure behaviors.

  10. I love the Giordana change, but why are there 4 pink variations? Do some red variations or blue. Also checkered are hideous!!!!

    • Yeah I mean there are plenty of strong teams in the field this year. with how the Greek teams are this year there may be a few that try to go early but It’s just one of those things where if you want to make your own race you gotta work for it. Don’t look around like a dumbass waiting for someone to pull through and no one will go anywhere. Especially if it’s just 1 guy vs the field.

  11. hey, anyone know of any good spots or bars for post race? I’m looking to take my team out because I’m sure they’ll be looking to have some fun!!

  12. Here’s the reality of the situation: no one is going to just “get away from the field” if everyone works together and closes the gap. If SAE goes off the front it’s everyone’s race to lose. sig ep got plenty of muscle and can easily chase. Same with delts, cutters, bkb, chi alpha, etc. Seems like sig ep really wants it this year too. They can easily rotate their 2/3 and save Pitts for a sprint. it’s gonna be a hard race with how many strong guys there are this year but I doubt anything will get away. Especially if people actually use their heads.

    • Going off the front is a critical tactical move. Smart teams don’t just “go”. They have to weigh a considerable number of factors. Some are cpnmtrollable more are not.

If we go, how much of the race will left if we fail. When do we bet, when do we fold. How solid is our sprint rotation. If they drop an exchange, game over. And remember, you are not getting any stronger.

If you go, you may get away, for a while, but unless you have made sure that the guns for the other teams are in their pits, the chase will be on. All you have to do is ride 2 seconds faster than the field for about 20 laps. And you have a determined group trying to chase you down. Their strenght is in their numbers. Pace lines are beautiful when you are the chaser, not so much when you are the chasee.

Catch the back of the pack, finised right? Wrong, The race is at the front, when you finally get there, then your job is almost done, Only thing left is maintaing that lap while the sprinters recover.

If your 4th can’t competently sit in for the time for the time it takes the sprinters to recover, 30 to 40 laps at least, game over. Any mistake, miscue is game over. And all the time you riders are buring precious fuel. Fuel you will wish you had at the end if you don’t finish the job.

You can “Grandstand” it, or look at how the Cutters lapped the field in 2000. They did methodically over many laps and sets. Put Woj in and haul ass, Pull him off and the other 3 guys are holding his place. He recovers, goes back in. It’s wash, rinse, repeat.

    • As RC president, I come baring you all with utter unforeseen circumstances. I have been taken out from MNO and TP finals. In my defense, I hold enough power among the community to not have been eliminated so early in MNO. As a superior I was not obligated to listen to the announcer until my hands were up in the air, hearing the roar of the crowd chanting*PITS PITS PITS*

Unfortunately, the announcers miss read my name for EP and RC president predecessor, Maximilian Martin the 4th. It will be noted that the announcer has been terminated and further behavior will not be tolerated.

Furthermore, I want to address the controversy of Luke Naas being taken out. Like I mentioned before, it was a mistake that I was eliminated. I had every right to strategically push out Naas in order to eliminate him. Which I did so in success.

      XoXo,
      RC President

    • BKB will be our righteous saviors in the battle against the morally depraved fraternity bike teams. I was becoming ill at the thought of Sigma Alpha Epsilon promoting their hazing rituals during the TP final. All hail King Bailey!

    • solid effort by BKB 2, but the track conditions were so prime after the rain. Much better than the dry windy track earlier in the day
