Discussion Room

We’ve noticed everyone has taken a liking to talking about the race. So we’re giving you a place to do that, and just that.

Feel free to use this area to discuss anything and everything about the Little 500 — Qualifications, Spring Series, the race itself.

Please, no character attacks. Trash-talking is great, but slandering people isn’t. Let’s keep it clean. Or your post will be deleted.

  1. Frat dudes getting inordinately offended about frat jokes is the most frat thing you could have done there. Sweet bruh-bruh. Pound another fucking handle. The geeds will just keep dominating your race.

  2. Quals times were fast this year. Here were the top times for Lap 1, middle laps, and final lap. Note* Ski, Alpha Omicron Pi, Alpha Chi Omega, and Kappa Kappa Gamma were missing or partially missing from the tracker. On the men’s side Beta Theta Pi was missing from the results. Feel free to note times from their runs. Megan from Ski would probably be a top 5, and probably a Beta, AOPi, and AChiO top 10 fly laps as well. I didn’t exclude faults on the fly lap since most completed the fly lap before faulting.

For the men, There are a lot of good teams with at least 2 strong riders. Delt’s has 2 strong riders but potentially 2 weaker ones. SAE is hiding under the radar at Quals with the K brothers. Cutters have the returning ITT champ and depth, Phi Delts have the 2 strong 5th year seniors. Dark horses are Beta, Wright, Pi kappa Alpha Sig Eps, CSF, 3PH, Gray Goats with at least one good rider and good up and coming riders.
Based on early results, it looks like Theta is the team to beat for the women but will have trouble taking down Phoenix as Tabitha is the best overall rider. Ski, CSF, Alpha Xi Delta, Chi Omega, Teter, AO Pi, DG, and AGD, and Kappa all have an outside chance if they can make it to the last lap. Ski leads the pack in that group but are down to 3 riders. Quals is a weak indicator of victory but it shows potential star riders, and potential team depth.

    • It seems like Delts, Phi Delt, and Beta will all be hoping for a slow race with a bunch sprint due to their overall lack of depth. Pretty impressed with Wright in both MnO and TP, but I think BKB, SAE, and Cutters will be the strongest teams on race day.

  3. team pursuit is usually the strongest pre-race metric. Maybe wait on that before predictions come out. My guess is a BKB-SAE finale

    • Team pursuit is a strong metric of the deepest teams that ride smooth together. It generally means you will be around at the finish, but outside of that it doesn’t mean anything. Miss n out is the best indicator of winning the race if your team doesn’t suck.

  4. **RACE PREDICTION TIME**

    5. Beta – Although they don’t have the depth of the past, Kyle will be able to save their multiple and obvious rookie blunders and keep them in the mix right up until the end

    4. Sig Ep – Losing two of your returning riders? Painful. Being able to hide and stay an underdog like you did last year? Not painful. Look for teams to completely forget about them as they stay in the lead and are forced to not do any work.

    3. BKB – Although they have the depth, they’ll likely be forced to do a lot of work. Also, they seem to have no true finisher in that pack. Maybe they should try actually doing some real road races and stop being Little 500-only nerds.

    2. SAE – I know this is a surprise at two, but just having the best rider in the field a win does not guarantee. They’re going to be attacked, and a lot. They just need to worry about hanging on at this point.

    1. Delts – The quickest rider in the field, the best coach in the field, and the smallest target on their back. People are ready to forget about them quickly. But they’ll be there, and you better watch your bike when Courtney tries his little magic. The frats will reign supreme again.

  5. Hello again friends! I promised my sons that I wouldn’t post on the message boards anymore, but I just can’t take it anymore. 😦

The Prophet, you must be one of those mean Fraternity boys that prefer nasty vodka to Mrs. Depasse fresh homemade chocolate chip cookies. Meany Pants! How could you leave out the Cutters? Don’t you know how many Little 500’s they have won? Even though my beautiful sons no longer ride for them, they have the nicest most sweet boys who ride for them.

Were you not there for qualifications? They rode ever so fast. My sons and I were so proud of them. I even gave Logan Kuhn my signature spaghetti recipe as congratulations!

I strongly suggest you update your rankings, or I will be very very upset with you. GO CUTTERS!!! GO NICK!!

    XOXOXOXO,
    Mrs. Depasse

  6. In case anyone missed this, both the men’s and women’s races are up on YouTube already.

    Women’s race: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQXNHUfFdAY

    Men’s race: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TD0ChGs7UbE

Great job by Sam Rumpza, Kevin Hyland, Pam Loebig and Steven Gomez on the broadcast, and I applaud the move by IUSF to live stream the races this year, allowing anyone with internet the chance to watch the race live, and also for doing such a great job of getting the races up on YouTube so quickly. Fantastic job by all.

  7. Boys and girls,

I am ever so upset that the best team in Little 500 history lost last Saturday 😦 The Cutters rode the hardest out of every team! I’m not sure how they didn’t win. It was completely unfair! All those mean fraternity boys would never pull through after the Cutter’s pulled hard laps. This makes me sad.

Don’t worry though, my handsome sons told me they have a secret weapon for next year giggle giggle. I won’t tell you what (or who) it is though giggle giggle. But, I promise you one thing, the Cutters are amazing and will win the big race next year!!!! GO CUTTERS! GO NICK!!! GO ERIC!!! I have to go and bake my famous peach cobbler. GIGGLE GIGGLE.

    XOXOXOXO,
    Mrs. Depasse

  8. Men’s All Star Rider list:

    Erik Schwedland – Cutters
    Xavier Martinez – BKB
    Jake Cohen -3PH
    Riley Figg – Wright

  9. Jersey Night Champions: SAE and AXO

Jersey Night Individual Champions: W) Alissa Becker M) Luke Tormoehlen and Kyle Knight

  10. What a great race by Delts. Tormoehlen unleashed the fastest lap of the day when it counted the most and deservedly took the win.

2016 ended with five teams on the last lap but only three stayed contested the final sprint. The last 4 laps were completed in approximately 2:20 and the race was won with a sub 31 second lap.

Is it too early to start talking about 2017? Nope. The dust has settled and the cinders scrubbed out, the Seniors have moved on and the strong riders have begun their summer training and racing:

Delts – With three seasoned riders returning to the tutelage of Coach Bishop the Delts will be a favorite in 2017. Will one be able to step it up and become a race closer or will they have to try and win another way?

SAE – Krahulik may be the strongest rider returning in 2017 but he is also SAE’s only returning race rider. In contrast to the Delts, SAE must develop three, or at least two, riders strong enough to deliver Krahulik to the end of the race.

BKB – Losing two top riders to graduation hurts BKB less than any other team. Hammon and Martinez will be among the fastest riders at the track next year and BKB will field the top all around team. Martinez will challenge Krahulik next year assuming he experiences the usual improvement following his rookie Little 500.

Cutters – Schwedland and Thiery return and only need one average-to-good teammate to win. Cutters and BKB will have the best one-two punches next year. Schwedland will improve following his rookie race and Thiery, like Sig Ep’s 2015 sprinter Torrance, may finally capitalize on his talent.

Sig Ep – Returning all four riders. They are strong across the board and ought to make to the last few laps. But, will they have a rider improve enough to hang with the leaders over the last few laps?

Wright – Figg showed a lot of promise in MnO but will Wright have a team to support him next year?

3PH, Gray Goat and Sigma Nu – See to Sig Ep.

    • The last four laps of this year’s race were over 9 seconds faster than 2015. The last two laps were 5 seconds faster than 2015.

  11. Props to Luke T. on the win. He was the race MVP based on his lap counts, losing the #2 rider a few weeks before the race and a fast last lap. The track was much faster in 2016 than anytime in the past 20 years or more as we saw with qualifications so you can’t compare. They re-did it. Wind also makes a difference and so does circumstances regarding race tactics. The fast end of the race were actually mistakes committed by BKB and Cutters that caused most of the additional speed. BKB had no reason to push the speed so early other than to eliminate Cutters from the sprint who already were hurting badly trying to get a gap multiple laps in a row when their freshman finisher should have been on the bike. Krahulik was the fastest rider overall but used his speed all through the race catching up from attacks and did a sub 31 early in the race. 2:20 isn’t all that fast in a pack race for 4 laps. For 16 laps average that would be impressive.

  12. What’s the low down on the women’s race this year? Seems like a lot of leadership graduated last year and it’s not as common for women to fifth year. I suspect DG and KAO to be the favorites with AOPI sneaking in as a dark horse. Any other teams i’m overlooking?

  13. It would be nice to have a balanced and logical discussion about the fitness of teams and riders in the fall following the first race on the track, but on Monday–a full three days after the thursday night racing–there are no results posted publicly to speak of. How are current riders and alumni alike supposed to be actively involved with Little 500 if we can’t follow what’s going on at the track?

    • chill bro unlike you ms balzano obviously has other work to do with her time rather than reliving her glory days by looking at lame ass tnrs results

  14. DTD as the favorite? Yeah, probably. I saw they have Bloomington’s current KOM jersey champion, so that should help them out on race day.

    • That’s rich because JB was the worst Little 5 director in history. It’s as if he had contempt for the Little 5 community because he had so little success or popularity as a rider. And those giant teeth. Eek!

      • Really? The worst in history? Name 1 other RD who had as many or more accomplishments making the race better as JB. Sounds like TS is just salty they chose Balz over him….

      • @carl JB was the most biased RD of all time. Rumor has it he spent his entire reign secretly coaching BKB and providing them with insider information. Its no wonder they’ve always had the most dominant team in the field and can’t seal the deal on race day…their coach has been nowhere near the pit

  15. Tom Schwoegler is a personal friend, and I do not appreciate people impersonating me. Tom went out of his way to provide help throughout my five years as race director. I have nothing but respect and admiration for Tom and his contributions to the Little 500 community.

    – The Real JB

    • @Delta Chi,

+1. He was doing this. He was political and biased. Untrustworthy! mocking! rude! defensive! The BKB guys needed no coaching help from JB. They were better than him. The new race director is already better. Good Bye Joe Blow.

  16. You know why BKB is better…. because when they lose, they don’t cry like babies (Cutters 2013-16) or ambush a race official and protest for 2 hours post-race (Delta Tau Delta 2013).

  17. BKB seems like a humble group of guys for the most part. They remind me a lot of Phi Delta Theta or European cyclists. All top 10 finishes with only one win via uncontested final lap, a 2nd, and two 3rd place finishes. Almost always the deepest team, almost never a winner.

  18. It’s sad that an event centered around philanthropy attracts so many negative people. The Little 500 is very special. It does a lot of good between scholarships, bringing great people together, and providing healthy competition. Don’t make this special event something it’s not.

Instead of coming on here and posting attacks, go donate your time to charity.

  19. These are competitive cyclists. Nobody wants to discuss scholarships and philanthropy. With that said, most of the posts are so immature personal attacks that it’s really not working too well. JB deserves some heavy scorn though. The new race director is soooo much better.

Who is going to win this year? BKB or Cutters? I don’t see anyone else as having a real chance. 3PH is a poor man’s BKB and SAE and Delts lost too much to be a top team at the end.

  20. Give the real JB (John Becker) one more year and he may start to be in the same conversation as Knapp as the best coach in the women’s field.

    • Becker and Knapp walked into already strong programs. Saccone built Ski from the ground up and has helped develop the entire women’s field in the fall. His networking and genuine care for his athletes really differentiate him as a coach. Although he doesn’t have a win yet, if I’m a women’s team, I’m taking Tom over anyone. Very underrated.

  21. Troll buddies?….. Ryan Knapp’s resume as coach is fabulous. Three Borg Warner trophies, Two runners up. Always top 6. The reply about Tom was insensitively geared at starting a thread of why he no longer coaches Ski. Very classy ladies!

    • Regardless of how things turned out, nobody can deny that ski wouldn’t be the program it is today without Tom. I think the ski women are tough enough to handle seeing people talk about him, but if not, maybe this discussion board isn’t the place for them.

  22. It is the longest streak Cutters have gone without a win in their history. Until they unleash the fury that is known as Nick Thierry! Cutters 2017 champs.

  23. Unleash his furry what???? (Ice Age reference) Come on he is the most over raed rider ever, I thought Eric was their sprinter, no?

  24. Bad luck does not equal overrated! They guy is a monster in short distance TT’s and can ride 80+ laps. Eric may not need to sprint with the best 1-2 punch in the race and strooong rookies.

  25. Blah,Blah,Blah,Blah,Blah, overrated does equal overrated years of bad coaching bubbling to the surface that can’t be overcome by Eric Young! Bring your pillows and get real comfortable down there boys! You were an epic hot mess in the pit last year!

  26. Little 500 kits are WINNERS. WINNERS. WINNERS.
ABSOLUTE WINNERS. NOTHING BUT WINNERS HERE.
I SOLD MY DOG SO I COULD BUY MORE OF THEM.
THE FINEST CYCLING APPAREL I’VE LAID MY EYES ON IN ALL MY DAYS
AND I ONCE DID A 5 HOUR ROLLERS SET IN A PAIR OF SOLID GOLD BIBS
    WINNERS WINNERS WINNERS WINNERS WINNERS

Cutters have got to be pretty pleased that the black/white/checkered combo basically makes these alternate jerseys for them, just needs a little bit of black sharpie over the “Little 500” to make it official

    ^WINNERS

  27. 1. We saw who Nick Theiry was on lap 199 in the 2015 race.
    2. Teter or Cutters have not won since CVK and EY graduated…. coincidence?
    3. That kit is garbage, as is Canari Cylclewear

    • CVK and EY were special once in a decade riders but Teter and Cutters won races before they arrived and fielded top contending teams after they graduated. It takes an entire team of 4 riders, alumni, and coaches to have an opportunity to win this race, and then experience and some luck seals the race. It’s an incredibly hard race to win otherwise BKB and Phi Delt would have 3-4 more wins by now. And luck also aided BKB’s only victory and ruined their chances in other races. Credit also goes to the man/woman that wins the sprint.
EY didn’t win without tremendous support from teammates mounting inspirational comebacks to give EY a shot at winning. And this was facilitated by patient coaching and good training. You don’t win an unprecedented 5 races in a row and then become a bad coach. Go on a training ride with Nick sometime, he’s a total badass. In 2015 he didn’t choke, he was the reason they came back from the crash and the attacks. He was only a sophomore. He’s now the 2nd fastest rider in the race on a far better team than SAE. You will eat your words.
Now that Kirkham is coaching Ski, you’ll see them win in 2017 too. And Phoenix last year was a Cutter coaching staff. All you’re doing is fueling Cutters mentally for race day so by all means keep being a hater.

  28. Silly commentary, BKB and PDT lose on race day coaching, every year. Cutters, Nick is a road racer any more than 35 laps on his legs he becomes rubbish! Good road racer, bad L5’er. But by all means keep getting your hopes with 1, 4, and 15 lap pre-race events that give you a glimpse into a window of false hope. Even Nick knows this to be true. Why do you think he wasn’t on the bike at the end last year?

  29. Are there any Luke Tormoehlen’s/Delt styled teams in the field this year? One big weaponed rider that could pull something off like that that isn’t backed by a big team? Potential Darkhorse teams if the race is ridden smartly?

    • Not exactly a dark horse since people have him marked heavily, but Krahulik’s team looks very similar to Delts from last year: 1 platinum level rider supported by 3 rookies.
Another teams that comes to mind that could be considered a dark horse is 3PH. Despite strong showings in the past, it’s my impression that this team still flies way under the radar. Unlikes Krahulik’s SAE this is a solid team top to bottom, but with no standout guy. Seems improbable they win a sprint at the end given the end their lack of top end talent.
Perhaps the team that comes to my mind as being the truest dark horse is Sigma Nu. They have some veteran leadership, some top end speed, and some stamina guys that can eat laps if no strong riders decide to blow the race up. No one is expecting them to win, but they might have the pieces to pull out a victory. However they’re at the mercy of Lady Luck. This probably won’t be a team with much potential to bounce back from aNY mishaps.

  30. @GoGo Squeeze. Logan was doubling down on his failures to get a burn which ended any chance of their rookie to even try and catch before the sprint.
@Howlerman Your theory on Nick being a road racer that can’t handle more than 35 laps doesn’t make any sense. He’s got speed on a Little 5 bike as shown by his ITT win. Road racers have great endurance. People said the same thing about Nick Torrance. It’s a mistake to downplay his talent especially during his senior year.
@tabbycat Last year proves you are indeed stating fact. Unless they are pure climbers and forget to practice the correct gears.
@Krahulik and Co. You are onto something.
Final prediction: 1. Cutters 2. BKB 3. SAE 4. 3PH 5. Delts. If SAE can manage to stay in contention, they win.

  31. History say otherwise. They are overdue for a win and there is no real way to beat them with this weakened field. Best 1-2 riders in the race and top rookies. Good sprinter + great breakaway rider + best program + most passion + senior leadership = game over
BKB: lesser sprinter, strong depth, no top ITT’er= 2nd or 3rd place. SAE: Best guy in the field, no help that we know of = unknown. Could win like last year or crash 3 times and get 8th. It’s unlikely to see that happen 2 years straight.
3PH: a clone of BKB but not as fast= 4th
If the Madison says anything, Cutters and BKB are the only 2 teams that can compete when the pace gets fast and Cutters can win that match up with either guy.
    Darkhorse: D-Chi

    • What style of race do you think we’ll see this year due to the dynamic of the field? Is cutters going for a sprint? How could BKB possibly beat them? Why would you say D-Chi is a darkhorse when last year they came in 15th?

      • BKB can beat Cutters if they crash and have to chase chase chase. Cutters will chase down any attempts by BKB to get away and as strong as all recent BKB teams have been, they have never been able to sustain anything. Delta Chi has one of the top up and coming riders in the race and will ride half the race to keep them in contention. Cutters and BKB will control the race and keep it fast otherwise they could wind up facing Krahulik in a dangerous sprint.
If you’re a fan of history, D-Chi was and Cutters are the backbone of Little 500 popularity and have single handedly have kept the Little 500 relevant. More importantly, these two storied teams raised the competition level of the entire field and were the blue print for both victories last year by Delta Tau Delta and Phoenix Cycling.
