Discussion Room

We’ve noticed everyone has taken a liking to talking about the race. So we’re giving you a place to do that, and just that.

Feel free to use this area to discuss anything and everything about the Little 500 — Qualifications, Spring Series, the race itself.

Please, no character attacks. Trash-talking is great, but slandering people isn’t. Let’s keep it clean. Or your post will be deleted.

  1. Very true Not a Fan. In fact, before Delta Chi/Cutters no one had any idea how to race Little 500. Some teams simply carried their bikes and ran around the track while others set their bikes down and just pushed them. Delta Chi riders realized that a bike could be pedaled – something we take for granted today but a revolutionary idea at the time.

    • Sarcasm is envy and jealousy in disguise so I must thank you for the compliment. You also missed the part about popularity and relevancy. Little 500 hit a peak at the tail end of the Delta Chi dynasty that lasted throughout the 1980’s with the emergence of the team known as The Cutters. Breaking Away may have been a movie about a 1960’s rider from Phi Psi, but the movie itself is stacked with Delta Chi riders including the Italian villain, the stunt double for the main character that did all the actual riding, as well as other stud riders from the fraternity. Without them, the movie would have been a joke in terms of action and real cycling. The current Cutter team embodies everything that Little 500 and life is supposed to be about and their detractors show themselves on this site repeatedly as the blue print to avoid in sports or in life.

  2. @Not a fan, wake me when u say something that makes sense! Better yet, you wake up, Cutters cant close. They havent finished better than 4th since 2012, so I am sure you will allow me the latitude, when I say Shut Up! Cutters haven’t earned the right to be discussed here. Lets make a deal, a top 3 in the last, oh 5 or so years earns you some slack, short that, zip it.

  3. And this is the reaction I was expecting and hoping for. Write off the Cutters when they are at their hungriest and most talented since 2010-2011. This team blows the last 5 years Cutter’s teams away and I’m not afraid to say it. What have you done for this race? I’m guessing not much and if anything short lived and uninspiring.

    • Hahaha that’s hilarious…. come on, lets be real. 2013 Cutters were the best team they’ve had since Eric started selling vacuum cleaners. Unfortunately for that team, Sam Harbison wanted to be the hulk and chase solo, while Phi Delts rode his wheel for 6 laps = not a good strategy. They probably would’ve won with Brian Depasse as the 4 instead of Eric Brodell.

How are they the hungriest now? After the documentary, crashes, last lap failures??

    • I’m interested in why you have such a high expectation for delts. It seems like they’ll look a lot like sig ep from last year. In my mind they don’t have the fire power to be competitive in a sprint and they don’t have the depth to do anything off the front.

  4. Funny that’s what you idiots said last year, almost word for word. Delts finished 15th in TP and won. Wake up, its BKB or Delts.

    • Self, just think about what you just said. You couldn’t have made a more goofy comment if you were a clown being interviewed by the circus over at Faux News. They had one great rider last year that was a sprinter with endurance. The whole team could be faster to where they end up 5th in TP but they have nothing in terms of winning. If that same Delts team raced the field again knowing what they know now, Delts would have been dropped well before the finish. They used the only strategy possible that could have worked and it did work because the field thought they were too weak to compete without Vicino. Luck like that doesn’t continue. Realize that Courtney’s entire success as a race day coach is taking advantage of teams that do their fair share of work.

      • True, a lot of people discredited them last year, but I was not one of them. Not as long as they had Tormoehlen. I also think they may have deliberately tanked team pursuit, but then again maybe not. The point is, like Not A Fan Said, they had one shot last year. Their entire strategy depended on their weaker guys laying low, sitting at the back of the pack, and eating laps when the pace was slow so that Tormoehlen could finish. This year those same guys can eat slow laps, but none of them will be able to do anything at the finish. You can’t dismiss that their team is completely different than last year. The same strategy from last year will not win it for them. I’m curious what strategy you think they should employ, Self.

  5. KraHulk and Co. gets bicycle racing. It’s interesting that SAE is similar to DTD from last year in terms of monster #1 rider but weakened depth from the previous year. This is where the depth of Cutters and BKB, and 3PH will be key as they know the only rider capable of sprinting like Tormoehlin is Krahulik.

  6. You assume Joe is going to be in the same shape, he could be better, or worse. Idk, Crissy told me he’s sad Andy isn’t there.

Regarding Courtney’s team, I’m pretty sure I heard they were all doping, which is why the riders were able to get that little sardine dick to the final sprint.

    Lets talk women’s race, seriously

  7. Bingo. There are only 100 laps and with a sprinter that showed she was head of her class, it is going to be an easy race to predict unless DG crashes and the field seizes on the opportunity to put them down by consistent pressure after a fall. Ski has a team that can try to attack toward the end but DG is too strong to not be able to sit their wheels. AOPi 3rd or 4th. I’d say Theta would take 2nd if they wanted to go for 2nd, but they will try to win and get blown up at the finish for 3rd or 4th.

  8. It’s Cutters or SAE.

Joe K only needs one competent teammate to get him to a sprint. He probably doesn’t even need that much as long as the rest of his squad can stay out of trouble.

Cutters have the most options when it comes to ways they can win. Last year they showed that Schwedland will be their sprinter. He is much improved. Don’t think he’s better than Joe K but he’s a better option than anyone on BKB if that’s what it comes down to. This also means Cutters can utilize Thiery as the workhorse he was meant to be. He can now inflict damage at will or hold a gap.

BKB will dish out another cookie cutter team like they have the last three years. Hammon can’t sprint and has yet to put himself out in the wind. Martinez doesn’t know how to race and will waste all his energy when he doesn’t have to. BKB is very solid and will dictate the pace of the race but not the outcome.

3PH races for a podium finish and gets it when BKB makes an ill advised break away attempt

    1) SAE
    2) Cutters
    3) 3PH
    4) BKB
    5) Beta

    • Fucking A brother, you said it best. I’m not as sold on the Cuts as you though. I don’t know or care about their other two riders. Hell, I don’t even know much about the supposed 1-2 combo. Doesn’t matter what they showed last year, fact is, their sprinter is a guy that hasn’t done a damn thing, Fact. That’s a bold statement though. Cuts haven’t been so hot since 2011. Time will tell.

SAE’s got some fresh meat, they gotta stay outta trouble, that’s the hard part though. Coach is pretty predictable. If they haven’t been training harder than in years past, I don’t see them being around in the end. Have been dropped in multiple races when it got fast the last 5 years. I hope Joe breaks the ITT record, but won’t happen because Balzano will ensure the track is in shitty condition for all men’s events, cause feminism.

BKB, I’m betting Martinez can learn a thing or two from their new pit coach, Ryan “Smoothie-King” Knapp. I’m also betting on BKB being the best finishing indie team, whether 1st or 2nd. In the BKB-Cuts battle between hottest Theta girlfriend, however, Hammon takes the cake there, facts only.

SNU. Jeremy Crawford. Sleeper pick for ITT, MNO champ. Following past SNU greats, he will look to dominate his senior year and bring some individual hardware to the house

Delta TD: C Bishop is gonna do work again, DTD DTD DTD. Do work C Bishop. We all remember what happened last time Delts wore yellow. Middle fingers, lots of middle fingers.

  9. Delts are a complete non factor. They have nothing and arent training, fact. “C Bishop” the most overrated coach in L5 history. Waste of discussion time. #JustDumbLuck

$ on BKB or Cutters, dark=SAE/3PH

  10. You guys are all a fucking embarrassment to Little 500 and intracollegiate athletics as a whole. Do you seriously have nothing better to do than rag on college kids about how hard they’re working on an extracurricular event that they’re doing for fun? Sadly, y’all seem to not have a strong enough bond to your former teammates and current riders to discuss these things privately with them. Great to see Little 500 alumni are no better than high school football players who never left town. Let me let ya in on some news: current riders don’t care about this little circle jerk y’all constantly have here, and only use it a) to fuel their training or b) to feel shitty about themselves.

If you want to discuss who looks good this year, by all means, stoke some competitive interest in the race. But once you start calling dudes ‘sardine dick’ and comparing girlfriends, you’ve gone way beyond the pale.

  11. Who is everyone even getting facts from? Delts, Beta, SAE are all in not a good place this year. They literally have no one. Except for Joe w/ SAE, but even then he has no one. Delts could have great strategy, but no one to execute it with. Beta lost Kyle Knight? Who else is there? How are these teams even strongly considered top 5?

  12. Because Delts are ALWAYS there, I don’t like it either but it is a fact, no matter what, no matter who they will always be there. The safest bet in little 500 is that Delts will be on the lead lap. If you’re on the lead lap you are in the top 5 most likely. Just probability that’s all.

    • Delts isn’t ALWAYS there. They were there when RJ was there, when Momper was there, when Tormoehlen was there. Before RJ, they weren’t top 5. This year, they literally have no one. Saying they are always there regardless of what team they have is discrediting so many strong riders that have kept them in the mix through the years.

  13. Think u just proved his/her point, that goes back to 2010, check results on IUSF.org before RJ they finished 2nd if u have to go back 9 years, thats always enough. When did Courtney start coaching them?

  14. Hey all! Pat Beneke here, I’m a junior majoring in international studies with a minor in women’s studies. I’m a rookie Little 500 rider on my new team, Flyin’ Fedoras. My friend Brian and I started this team because we love riding, and want to win the LIttle 500. We’ve got 5 guys committed, but are still looking for cool guys to share our love of riding. Two of us finished the Ride Across Indiana averaging 18.5 mph! What we need most is a coach! We want someone with knowledge of training and strategy, though we’ve learned a lot about that by watching past races on YouTube. We are all huge Team Major Taylor fans, and Team Teter Quad! Can anyone tell me if either of those coaches are available? I would love to talk shop with them about how Flyin’ Fedoras are gonna shock the Little 500 world this spring. You can contact me direct at carbonlegs6669@hotmail.com. All right, thanks for your time. Have a great day, gentlefolk and m’ladys.

  15. i think its hilarious u kids talking shit about Momper. u wouldnt say this shit to him at race day, hes jacked. not only that but he wears the freshest kits, eats at the chillest restaurants and hangs out with the hottest dudes. yall are pathetic lol

  16. Let’s all be completely honest: This race is the Cutters to lose. With returning 2 of the strongest riders in the field in Theiry and Schwedland, they will be able to match any team’s depth. That includes BKB, who can’t even matchup with Cutters. Thiery > Hammon. Schwedland > Martinez in a sprint (as we all saw at TNRS). Speaking of TNRS, Cutters rookies went 1-2 in dominant fashion. If those 2 are racing this spring, I don’t really see any other team being able to match up and have any favorability against Cutters, unless Reid Wilson and 3PH all make steady improvements across the board. I think Sig Ep will surprise people and take 2nd. Returning all 4 riders and I think this will be the year Charlie Hicks makes the jump we all expected him to make after his freshman year. Joe will singlehandedly carry SAE to the sprint, but won’t have the gas to make a play for the win from doing 100+ laps. I can’t see teams allowing him to pull a delts and just sit in the entire race. Dark horse for this year is Delta Chi. Abel will eat laps. If they can develop a sprinter, they should be able to keep them fairly fresh for the end.

    1. Cutters
    2. sig ep
    3. 3PH
    4. SAE
    5. dchi

    • -Cutters best finish since 2011: 4th. Honest.
-Cutters had two stronger riders in 2013, first and second in SPRING ITTs. Result: 4th.
-Clearly, you’re a bandwagon fan, with a clear bias.
-Bring your tissues for race day; you know, when you’re shocked they didn’t win

      • Cutters would’ve won in 2013 if Sam didn’t try to play hero ball for the documentary cameras. They’ll be back again in the spring. Just you wait. BKB will miss the lead lap. No replacing Spencer. Don’t know why he wasn’t sprinting for them when he was a tire width away from getting BKB their first real win

      • BKB almost beat your precious Cutters in TNRS (like it matters), but saying that they won’t be on the lead lap is just staright up ignorant. I like Abel but I have a feeling people are giving him too much credit

  17. Cutters have the best 1-2 punch and similar depth to BKB from their 1 guy to their 4 guy. Enough teams are worried about them that the pack will respond to all of their burnouts. Cutters are deep, but they will ride the hardest race.

    • Although I agree we should not count out Delts, but without a rider like Luke and with high caliber teams like Cutters and BKB and 3Ph pushing the pace, I don’t think they’ll have what it takes. Gonna come down to a Cutters, BKB, SAE sprint, and in that scenario Joe wins 9/10 times

      • You seem to have forgot the fact that in the 2016 race Joe crashed in turn one when he tried to sprint through the turn.

      • I remember. But after 2 crashes he was still able to finish 2nd in a 3 man sprint. If his team develops and they race like 2016 DTD, he will be unstoppable on lap 200.

  18. Delta chi FTW. Abel has more endurance than any rider in this race and will keep them on the lead lap. Waiting on a teammate to show up as a sprinter. If they get that, Cutters, BKB — watch out!

  19. I think it is ignorance 4 people 2 discounts delts as the favorite. They return a freshman and two sophomores from last. They will be significantly better as that program develops Riders. It seems year after year they have mastered the art of lulling everyone to sleep right up until race day. Keep your eyes open they will be the team to beat.

  20. Everyone keeps talking about Cutters having the best 1, 2 punch out there. Maybe I’m missing something but based on the body of work from this year and last year’s results, I’m not sure how you come to that conclusion.

Thiery is a legit #1 rider. He’s proven that. No argument there.

Is Schwedland any better than any a number of other teams #2 riders? Specifically BKB, Sig ep, or 3PH? All the cutter fanboys keep talking about how he can sprint really well based on last years race. He didn’t compete in the sprint last year and rode like 20 some laps. That is not evidence of a terrific sprinter.

He had a good ITT outing (10th place), and pretty meh MNO and TP’s if my memory serves me correct. Due to Cutter’s raceday strategy of trying to rest him which backfired horribly, he was pretty much a nonfactor on raceday especially since he got the bike off the back on the last exchange(no fault of his own.) My point is that he seems like a very capable, solid rider, but Cutters having the best 1, 2 unanimously seems pretty off based.

Can’t wait for Cutter’s to lose their mind after reading this.

  21. Anybody know if Kalbfell formerly of BKB is racing L5 this year? Could instantly make a number of teams a contender or make a team like Delts or SAE the hands down favorite

  22. Last I heard Kalbfell never raced Little 5 before. All he did for BKB was give them a good ITT rider, not sure why all the hype.

  23. Why don’t we note Matt Thompson of 3PH placed top 5 in ITT’s this fall and Reid Wilson won every Cat 5 race he signed up for. 3PH for Little 500 Champs.

    • I’ll tell you why, Matt. Fall ITTs don’t mean anything, a lot like TNRS. BKB had 5 in the top 10 and nobody really cared because a lot will change before the spring. Also, 5’s races aren’t hard to win for a cyclist who trains for little 5. 3PH will be anywhere 5th-10th place. SIG-EP FTW!

  24. Cat 5 race? Now come on. They are a good all around top 5 team and will be there at the finish if things go as planned. They just don’t have a Nick Thierry or a dominating sprinter.
