We’ve noticed everyone has taken a liking to talking about the race. So we’re giving you a place to do that, and just that.

Feel free to use this area to discuss anything and everything about the Little 500 — Qualifications, Spring Series, the race itself.

Please, no character attacks. Trash-talking is great, but slandering people isn’t. Let’s keep it clean. Or your post will be deleted.

  1. I’m entertained by how many people really want to talk shit on this website and hide behind it. There are few people who should be talking shit on here because in this year’s field there are few champions. For example there are only 3 Little 500 champions in the race (JETBLACH’s returning three), and 3 champions in series events ITT’s: (Thiery, Joe K, Xavier). Next is Miss n Out: (Joe K, and Thiery). Then on to TP which BKB has dominated from 2014-2017…

  2. Anyone know how they score spring series. ITT’s and TP is seems obvious that first gets 1 pt, 2nd gets 2pts and so on down the line. I can figure out the first six in Miss-n-Out, but how does one assign points after that? And does quals count towards spring series points?
    Thanks!

    • Quals is not included for SS points. According to the L5 Riders Manual MNO is scored as follows:

      • Riders eliminated in the preliminary heat will receive 30 points
      • Riders eliminated in the quarterfinals will receive 12-15 points, based on their placing in the heat.
      • Riders eliminated in the semifinal round will receive between 7-11 points, based on their placing in
      the heat.
      • Those who make it to the finals will be assigned 1-6 points, depending on the order of their finish.

      • Thank you,
In looking at the final placement for quarterfinals it’s difficult to determine place, but good information to know.

  3. Women’s Unofficial Spring Series Results and Predictions.
    35 Theta
    46 DG
    99 SKI
    99 AOPi
    100 PMu
So it seems it might be a two horse race. Theta’s top three ITT’s positions 2,3,8 and DG 6,9,10. Theta’s top three MNO, 2,3,9 and DG 1,6,11. Then team pursuit was DG, Theta as 1st and 2nd. Both teams are stacked with their fourth riders also finishing in the top 16 in ITT and third as semi finalists and 4th as at quarterfinalists in MNO.
AOPi Did well in ITT going 4,7,17 and very well in MNO getting 4,9,10 but had a poor TP getting 12th.
SKI under-performed going 5,22,36 in ITT but did very will in MNO going 5,7,12, and came in 3rd at TP.
Pmu went 14,15,23 in ITT, were 8,12,12 in MNO and came 4th in TP.
Theta is well set with two riders in Bennett and Brown capable of sprinting out the final laps. DG, has Bignal and possibly Rivich, and AOP has Oppel. I don’t see SKI having the sprint capability in Hubregste to beat the others out, although she could probably get to the final lap by herself.
I can’t see anyone else having a real chance unless something catasrophic happens to the top three teams. I think in ideal race conditions and barring any incidents, I would give the nod to DG.

Predicitons are DG winning, Theta, AOP for podium, and then SKI, PMu, AXO, Teter in the mix.

    Any other thoughts?

    • AOII split their race team on their two team pursuit teams so they probably would have finished third bumping Phi Mu and Ski each down one spot. I agree that DG is the team to beat. Theta is a team of great individual riders but they don’t seem to have the team focus that DG and AOII have as seen in MNO finals.

    • I don’t think its as close between DG and Theta as you’re making it out to be. We saw at MNO that as soon as Bignal decides to make a move it’s all over for Theta. I think Theta would have a shot at wearing down DG if the race was 150 laps or more but over 100 laps, DG can match Theta punch for punch. They both have depth, but DG has the star.

  4. On the men’s side, I’m predicting the race to be a very thin race up front. I can see 10 teams staying on the lead lap until lap 100. BKB, Cutters, Beta, Sig ep, Bears, Forest, Jet blach, 3PH, Gray Goat, and CSF. SAE is one bad exchange or wreck from being put off the back, and after watching their rookies this spring, I’d bet the house on them being involved in at least 1 wreck. As for the contenders, all of them have a pretty significant flaw. I think we know very little about Cutters this spring. Theory is obviously one of the strongest riders in the field, but I am very concerned about their 4th rider being a huge liability. BKB still seems to have sprinter trouble and I don’t think they’re truly as deep as their Team Pursuit runs make them out to be. Sig ep is a poor man’s BKB. 3PH/GG both have a strong 1-2 but fall off significantly for their 3-4. I think if Bears can stay with the lead pack till the end, Figg will surprise some people. He was there for the MNO final and bad tactics aside, looked the strongest.

    1. Bears
    2. BKB
    3. Cutters
    4. Sig Ep
    5. 3PH

    See y’all in a week!

    • Yeah, Bears/Wright hasn’t finished inside of the top-10 since 2008, but they are definitely going to win the race this year…not.

EP is the favorite. Three seniors with tons of experience and a strong sophomore to boot.

      • EP is not the favorite. BKB dominated the entire spring series handedly while EP couldn’t even beat Gray Goat or CSF at TP

    • You’re concerned about Cutters 4th being a liability?? What about their 1st & 2nd? One has quit on the last lap of a race and the other solo crashed. Hopefully Fowler has fixed that.

  5. Early prediction: Race thins out to 5 teams before lap 100. Cutters, BKB, Sig ep, Gray Goat, and 3PH all play chess with each other for the next 50 laps. Cutters/BKB work together and break away. Cutters drop BKB after they make another stupid move. Cutters laps the field again.

    • And then the 4th Cutter rider that can’t hang on for 5 laps in team pursuit gets re-lapped by the field bringing it all back together, right?

  6. Bkb making another dumb move haha, what was the 2016 race trying to make Kuhn or whatever his name was burn for cutters and bkb ultimately destroying their chances of winning. If anyone makes a dumb move it’s cutters. Ask thiery he did give up in the 2015 race.

    • First men’s race in 6 years that isn’t going to be sunny and calm winds. Looks like wet conditions and strong winds strangely coming out of the East at 15-20 mph. Team Pursuit saw winds at 20 mph most of the day and BKB put 20 seconds into the next fastest team over 15 laps. Give them 200 laps and I predict a solo finish. Not necessarily lapping the field, but I see a lot of teams giving up when it gets hard the last 50 laps battling against that wind down the front stretch.

      Men’s Podium:
      1. BKB
      2. Beta
      3. Sig Ep

      Women’s Podium
      1. DG
      2. AOPi
      3. Theta

  7. M&A,
You’re using some reverse logic there. Very nice. You’re assuming there is no pack if BKB is going to ride off the front with high winds.

  8. Sneaky Pick for the Women’s Race: SKI

Meg H. knows how to race her bike, they’re both deep and well coached, and they don’t have a Theta/DG sized target on their backs.

If it doesn’t come down to a sprint (Bignal wins that) , SKI is my pick to ride away with it

    • Any of the top teams has a target on their backs. Can’t see SKI slipping off the front, or any of the top teams for that. It would have to be a really sneaky move. Theta has tried the last few years to break off the front and haven’t been able to maintain it. Wouldn’t be surprised if they try again this year. AOP rode aggressively last year too, be interesting to see what they do. DG has been off the front several times the last few years, and I think twice last year (someone might confirm that) and have always waited for the pack.
Will anyone try to ride away from the pack this year?

  9. DG is going to follow out Theta’s final exchange and do a plus 1 to give the bike to Bignal. There needs to be a counter move by Ski or Theta to force DG’s final rider to either chase or get on the bike very late when the pace is too fast to get a gap.

Bignal can be beat but she needs to be out of her comfort zone which is a straight up field sprint.

  10. A team pulling away is definitely more likely in the men’s race. I’d bet BKB, Sig Ep, or maybe even Cutters trying to go off the front towards the end of the race.

    • Agreed. This year’s field reminds me of the 2012 Men’s race, where there were only about 5 contenders and they seperated themselves pretty early on. The difference this year is that there’s no RJ in the feild to blow things up. (you could make the argument that Krahulic fills that role, but I don’t think he has the support to pull it off). My pick is BKB to TT away with it around 180

  11. BKB has tried and failed repeatedly to break away. 2012 and 2013. Val overestimates his teams consistently and BKB will pay the price by attempting to break too early, thinking BKB is stronger than they truly are. Reeled back in by lap 180. Theory, Schwedland, and Guyon lap the field in 20 laps. This is the strongest Cutters team since 2013 and I expect they will show it on Saturday, regardless of a lackluster Team Pursuit performance

    • We as a community are so sick of Cutters shitty personality. I literally, and others, can’t wait to see you guys lose so bad after all the shit talking you riders of Cutters are doing on here. Cutters are the most hated team on the track the last two years because there guys are legit boners. Ten, I’m gonna guess you are either Thiery or Patrick, you guys can’t keep your mouth shut. There’s a reason you’re team can’t produce when it matters.

    • last attempt was 4 years ago, I wouldn’t call that a trend.
If they launch as early as they did in ’13 they have no chance.

The rest of your prediction… I guess we’ll see

      • If they launch from 180-185 it’ll be hard to catch them but I’m not sure where they went from in 2013

      • @DZ Right around 170

I get it though, everyone’s on edge at 20 to go, so It’s hard to get a good burnout without setting off alarms, let alone go off the front.

    • Cutters are strong, no doubt. The only concern I have with this prediction is that the unseasonably rainy weather predicted might cause Theiry or Schwedland to have a visit from Aunt Flo. That could hurt their chances.

  12. CrisPy’s breakaway attempt was 3 laps. He would have made it if he wore different shoes. And I’d tell him that straight to his face. CrisPy is a good guy.

  13. “Hey when we win again we will need a bigger trophy case, our current can only hold 12, if you know of anyone who could build help us out, that would be fantastic.”-STOP CUTTERS

Ok so here’s the thing, Cutters have a great history, but current Cutters talking smack about post race victory scenarios, is frankly unwise. Nick T has done nothing Ever in Little 500, the Ryan Leat of Little 5. The current group does have an abundance of baseless arrogance, that will serve no purpose other than putting a huge target on themselves and their weak 4th Rider.

You can look in Trevor’s eyes and see the deer waiting for the headlights of race day. Alumni Cutters carried themselves with quiet confidence. This group brashly boasts of greatness riding the backs of Legacies, shameful and it will do nothing but get you crushed on race day.

    • I couldn’t agree more with “Cutters Stop Themselves” they are riding the backs of legacies and are truly the single most arrogant team. I do believe they have a shot to win unfortunately, they are 4 deep with No-Balls Theiry, Erik, the Junior Guyon, and their 4th rider freshman. Fowler played spring series well by hiding their 4th rider who everyone now thinks is a weak freshman which is smart, I saw the kid at Rookie Week destroy everyone, including SAE’s 2,3 and 4 ride, and when i say destroy, I mean he single handedly rode away on solo breakaways from lap one and won by 3/4 of lap. But can he line up against vets? I doubt it, he is arrogant like Nick T and without a doubt, not what he thinks he is nor will he line up well against BKB or Sig Ep’s 4th. Regardless I do not believe they can win with no sprinter, I would put money X or if Joe is on the lead lap, they will go 1/2. An alum myself, I hate to see such arrogance by a team and truly hope this resolves itself because the Little 5 community should not be in divide due to one team, Cutters should take a look at other independent teams such as BKB or 3PH who are involved and have quality kids on their team. With all this being said, I see this coming down to 4 or 5 teams on the lead lap with Sigep, BKB, Bears, and Beta, and if Cutters gets their shit together, maybe them but I doubt it.

    • For real though, since I started cycling talented cyclists are some of the cockiest people I have ever talked to. Haha is it really out of the norm?

  14. Anyone recall a race where 2 or more teams truly worked together? Either in a break away attempt or by systematically harassing another team’s breakouts? Seems like some sort of combination of teams such as Beta, Sig Ep and Bears ought to work with Cutters OR BKB. Cutters and BKB know that they each have a sprinter that can win the race. It would be in either’s best interest to try and eliminate or at least fatigue the other.

    • Second dumbest post ever for a number of reasons, how is that going to work, ESP? Those teams are no where’s near each other on the track, would be impossible to coordinate and the assumption that bkb has a sprinter is simply ignorant. Short that though, have a great day!

      • Any opinion is valid. It’s not like L5 racers are pro racers that have a track record of 50+ little 500s that we can look at and know for sure if you’re right or Teamer is right.

  15. @easterisland, it’s race week, so he’s constantly staked out at either nick’s or Armstrong talking to you very nicely to your face and then immediately insulting and talking shit about you to the next person he sees.

  16. Here’s my shot at race predictions:

For the women I think DG takes their fourth victory. I wouldn’t be surprised if some team outside of the 4 favorites (dg, theta, aopi, ski) mixes things up with an early gap, but I can’t see that sticking to the finish. The teams at the top match up well with depth so I am anticipating only 4-6 teams will hang in the lead pack once the pace really picks up around lap 70-75. The outcome of this race isn’t obvious though, the 4 teams I mentioned above all have a great shot at winning. Theta has the best 1-2 bunch so they should be able to deliver their sprinter the most comfortably. With gaps, aopi and ski can take the victory from a couple laps out. Should be an exciting race. Everyone stay safe and no mechanicals!

  17. The men’s race is much more open and the possibility of more different scenarios leads to many more outcomes. The addition of rain and somewhat strong winds will mix things up further.

BKB will win if it’s a fast race. They simply have more depth than other teams. What should concern them is that this year is really no different than previous years. They’re always deeper than most teams and they usually don’t win. For them to win they need to work with other teams that are capable of keeping the race fast, but which team wants to work with the spring series winners that have the itt champ? I cant think of any that woulf be too eager. BKBs best shot at winning is a fast race that leads to a late breakaway. BKBs top mno finisher wasnt selected to race this year and the field is aware of that. Teams are not afraid to sprint against the bulls and will chase them out aggressively in the last 50 laps.

There’s a slew of other teams that don’t like their odds in a sprint and will try a late breakaway attempt. Sig ep, 3ph, goats, beta come to mind. With so many teams banking on a similar strategy, it will be tough for any one team to execute.

Teams like BEARS and Sae in particular are hoping for a slow race that ends in a sprint finish. Depending on how confident they are in their 4th rider, Cutters might be hoping for a sprint too.

There’s a lot of different outcomes. While Bkb is still the strongest team and has the best shot. The strongest team doesn’t always win.

Bkb wins a fast race. Bears wins a slow race. Sig ep or cutters wins a chaotic race where they’re able to slip off the front from 20-30 laps out.

  18. OK.
So we were a little off, maybe a lot off. But the result in the women’s race shouldn’t be a surprise. And I think a previous post may have called it. I will have to confirm it looking at the race when it’s available but I think Theta did wait for Bignal to do a +1 and made their move a little earlier than most were anticipating. Not really a big surprise as Theta have pulled a similar move in the past few races, so the other teams should have been targeting them and following them out rather than giving them the opportunity. DG fought back and came to within about three or four bike lengths on a Theta exchange but the rider couldn’t get the wheel and keep up with the fresh rider. A wonderful move at the right time, and a lot of credit to AOP as they almost made it a two team race. It didn’t really seem like the chasers were interested in working together, or they got impatient with one another in trying to catch up. The break really created the chaos.
Congratulations to Theta on the win.

  19. I guess Theory couldn’t find his balls during the last 30 laps of the men’s race. Once again, arrogance gets in the Cutters way and their supposed star cracks when it really matters. With BKB and Theta both breaking away, I think it’ll be a few years until we see breakaways win either race. Knapp executed his strategies to perfection. For those keeping track at home wondering who’s the best L5 coach…last weekend’s score

    Knapp: 1/1
    CB: 14/17

  20. I hear Mangel has THREE balls instead of two!!! No wonder he was able to ride away from the field. ️Perhaps some lucky lady will be able to confirm this rumor after tonight??

    • BKB returns 3 riders who won this year plus a top 20 ITT and top 5 MNO finisher. They are looking as the favorites again. Goats brings back one person, can they come back from that? Cutters returns 3 guys, Erik who will be a senior and a top 5 ITT, Guyon who will be a junior and a top 5 ITT, and Coulter who will be a sophomore next year who threw also his ITTs and spring series so don’t really know how fast he is but looked very strong through the race so we will get to actually see his trial ITT time next year hopefully. Big deal is that SAE returns all 4 riders, after another year of training, do they have legs to win? I see BKB as the clear favorite and also SAE right up there with Cutters if they can get a 4th but BKB has it in the books if they don’t crash, they will pull off 2 in a row. Great 2017 race

      • Do you know or are you simply speculating about the Cutter’s rookie throwing his ITT and MNO results? Are either Guyon or Colter going to be race finishers?

      • Yes I know for a fact the Cutters rookie Coulter threw his ITT and throwing his MNO can not be confirmed officially but it seems to be the case that Fowler was attempting to keep him on the down low through the spring series but the ITT throwing confirmed by multiple sources. Guyon is a very strong racer, he looks to be the finisher, I wish we could’ve seen him finish the race instead of Erik, maybe could’ve beat goats if they had him on the bike instead. Cutters future is strong with Coulter and Guyon but my pick for now goes to BKB again next year but in 2019 when X is the lone man left from this years winning team, look for the Cutters with Guyon and Coulter to pull it off. I am excited for the future, as a former fraternity rider myself I would love to see the frats get back in play after this year, anyone know any good fraternity teams for the next few years?

      • @90s Alum, If BKB keeps Knapp in the pit and X keeps improving he could pull a Luke T as a senior and still beat Cutters with those 2 like Luke did the Krahuliks

      • Optimus Prime, yes that is very true. After a year like this, BKB should be able to continue to bring in some good guys to surround X, I could very well see that. Knapp seems to have the upper hand on Fowler today, Knapp is looking to make BKB a true dynasty. Cutters need a win in the next 2 years to prove they still are the program to beat.

    • @Data don’t forget about Kevin 219 Mangel. 4th place in ITT’s and finishes off the race for BKB. Three guys returning from a championship team, two of which were top four in ITT’s, will be awfully scary for 2018, so long as BKB doesn’t rest on its laurels.

      • I erroneously had BKB K. Mangel marked as a Senior this year. Its too bad we are unable to go back and edit our posts.

  22. BKB – Great win! They leveraged their absolutely superior team strength through all 4 riders to boldly commit to the right move at the right time to take the win.

Gray Goat – Out muscled and out gutted Cutters and Beta to firmly grab second place.

Cutters – Should Cutters be happy or slightly disappointed to take the third spot on the podium? I think happy. Maybe a different pit placement MIGHT have allowed Cutters and GG to work with Beta and chase down BKB. But, in all likelihood a different pit placement would have only postponed the inevitable BKB victory.

  23. I had no clue how completely dependent delts are on Courtney’s coaching. They were one of the favorites going into the race and killing it up until 130 Ish. In the last 70 odd laps their 3 returning champions and 20 th place ITT SUPERSTAAAAAAAR aaron zollman got 5 laps down by the end of the race. It’s like those guys couldn’t think for themselves without Courtney telling them what to do

    • One of the favorites? How? Returning 3 champions… They wouldn’t have won without Luke. They are trash. Zollman is trash.

      • @Zollman, bro don’t act all big on here, you weren’t even a top 20 ITTer, you wrecked and took your team out of the race and couldn’t bring it back. You are not Luke, you rode for one year and did nothing. Your teammates are Little 500 champions, not you little homie. Wake up and smell the fresh air. I will meet fly my ass back to Bloomington from Cali and meet you at Roys any day, name the time and place.

      • Zollman wrecked well before that and they were down a lap before that happened and he couldn’t bridge or make it up and they got put out early. This has nothing to do with Bishop. He’s a fantastic guy and was always great to me, I have nothing but respect for the man and how he runs his program and I feel terrible for what happened to him.

  24. I think it is a little early to be making fun of what was very clearly a hate crime. The 3PH guy had always seemed real nice to me… Too bad he is a raging racist (SAD!!!)

    • Strong Jersey Night performance out of a lot of teams last night. On the women’s side of things we had AOPi (seniors especially), Theta, and AXO really impressed. There were some shambly moments but they held it together and helped to all close down Roys. Also noteworthy performance out of Sweet Potato Club. First they trolled BKB in the rider’s week groupme then they shined bright when the pressure was on out on the patio. Look for big things out of SPC the rest of the week. Rumors of theta getting violent were present as well, I’m still waiting for my sources to confirm or deny. Award for smallest jersey goes AXID, Heard that a kid had his rib cage crushed from trying to get it on all the way. CSF really put in a fun performance as well holding down their booth in the front stretch of the patio.

On the men’s side: Right out of the gate there was a pregame hosting battle between 3PH/GG and SigEP/BKB. SigEp/BKB making it known because those boys love attention. Heard good things from both pregames. Heard Forest was bringing the big guns out to play with a Keg. Forest started their jersey night like a first year ITT, way too strong out of the gate and crumbled in the final laps. Gray Goat was impressive with Hot Brad and JuiceLikeWelch putting in masterful performances that matched their race day effort. Apparently the Ice Mile and all those liver Openers have been paying off. The Black Key Beers showed their stamina with 3-4 riders closing down the bar. Sammy put in a rather shambly performance, their lack of depth really showed post midnight. Beta brought some former riders out to play, they put in a well rounded performance from both alumni and current riders. Just shows that they have built up a real program. Other teams of note, acacia didn’t succumb to the Rasta jersey curse, 3pH had 45 of those blue jerseys around, and Joe K of SAE looked to be exchanging early and often (jersey wise).

We will try to keep current updates going as rider’s week progresses.

      • @imwashedup is yet another member of the lying mainstream Little 500 Media!
Joe K ONLY parties shirtless while waving a tank top over his head AND could not fit into any regular sized riders jersey! #Falsereporting

      • Here is tuesday’s night recap:
Shout out to the boys of a fraternity that will not be named for hosting Wine & Cheese Night, not trying to make you the next phi psi. Overall not as strong a showing from the whole community as you would expect. Maybe they went to hard on their jersey night set and are trying to pace themselves to boats. Several of the community stalwarts were there in attendance but some noticeable absences from some “TTBTs” (top tier bike teams). Theta sent a sole representative and BKB & SigEp were a no show, that will be at least a 2-Ice penalty come Bar Crawl thursday night for each team. Notable highlights included Joe K of SAE climbing a tree at least 30-40 feet up, he was as high as a Collins kid on 4/20. Gray Goat showed up and stuck together, those high threshold workouts seem to work both on and off the track. They are making the most of their endurance before they become washed up. Two of the geediest sorority teams IMO, AGD and AXiD put in a strong effort bringing the whole sQUADS out to play, AXiD served as excellent DJs so respect there. Other highlights: Jake Cohen brought a deep fryer and served up rounds and rounds of corndogs. Kid gives the people what they want. Hope Nick Thiery of Cutter’s fingers are okay after burning them last night, It’s unknown whether Rachel B is just too hot to handle or he burned them another way. 2/5th down on riders week and we already have a lot of good memories. Keep it up boys and girls!

  25. I can’t believe no one has said anything about BKB moving up the all times win list!!!

Congrats BKB, now you are only one win away from a share of 5th place with other greats like Sig EP, ATO, Phi Delts, Acacia, Sigma NU, and Zach Lusk!

    • Zack Lusk is a God Damn leged, he’s a stud man, I swear to you he is Jesus on wheels with a little bit of Greg LeMond, Peter Sagan, and Bradley Wiggins, with some sexy mixed in there. He is damn sexy, his nipple piercings made all the FIJIs get a woody. Zack Lusk = sexy hunk on two wheels that carried the Cutters to 3 consecutive wins during his glorious career.

  26. I’m so tired of people saying Cutter’s rookie throwing SS. Why have him so poor at ITTS?Why have him drop out of TP on lap 4? He may have actually helped the shit how that was their actual run. Or did they throw that too? They must’ve taken a lot of acting classes to practice looking tired because they looked fucking terrible and like they were trying hard and BKB still whooped their asses. If cutters were as strong as they want everyone to think they would’ve bridged BKB’s gap during the race and won. But they aren’t that strong or else they would’ve won the race! We’ll see if their egos shrink down to where they belong after their weak 2017

    • Hey there are tampons and pads on sale at CVS this week, you probably pre-order about a shelf’s worth. There’s some chocolate too, not on sale but you could use it.

      – On behalf of the Cutter’s Family

      • @Rantx2

Not everyone can be a cutter because not everyone’s a total douche. Also keep throwing shade at BKB, not like they’ve beaten you the past 4 years or anything.

      • @Rant God damnit you burned me man, you win, Cutters are total douchebags. I will sit here and stare at our 12 first place trophies and sulk in my misery.

      • Rantx2,

I will bet you a million dollars that you do not have twelve 1st place trophies sitting in a trophy case. : )
        I’m guessing you’re meaning figuratively.

The race is over. Congrats to BKB!

      • @Rantx2, on behalf of BKB and really every other team but you, we really appreciate you doing our recruiting for us.

      • @ThanksBruh hey anytime man, if you need any more help we can let you guys borrow a few of our 1st place trophies to impress your recruits, we have 12 to go around and since you only have 2 we figured you could use some help. We won’t even charge, we love helping out the L5 community, any of our current riders would have no problem dropping them off. The rings will cost you though, personally i would charge to let someone borrow my rings but we can discuss the details later.

      • Rant Deuce
        You’re a 10 horned goat
Please return to the rock you’ve come from & go bye bye

  27. If you’re a recruit trying to decide to ride for Cutters or Black Key Bulls, the choice is simple. Join the Bears!

  28. Instead of attacking people, let’s get back to talking about the race or other race related things. Discussion boards are no place to attack people

    • Ditto. All star and rookie list. And what about next years. Who’s looking good for 2018.
Both theta and DG graduate two riders. I think both will be strong again next year though. Race Brown should be a top rider, and DG have three girls in top 12 from ITT’s returning. Hannah Brookes will be eligible for Melanzana. Could she be next years Tabitha Sherwood? Any other good lookin returning teams?

  29. This whole recruiting talk is silly. The number of good independent teams has increased and the Cutters performance on the track has decreased. What’s appealing about joining the Cutters, free meals at Scholars Inn? Looking like a tool at the post race banquet? Sign me up.

    • Why CUTTERS?

Because you want to ride for a team where 3rd place is considered a “Decreased performance on the track.”

Because even when you lose, the only thing people want to talk about is you.

      • That decreased performance of 3rd place was their best finish since 2011. So don’t act like you’re too good for 3rd place.

    • All 4 cutters victories 1984-1992 were just d-chi’s who stole a name from a movie so should probably be credited to that frat. But 8 W’s still impressive as an quasi-independent team. Must be a delta chi in drag👩🏻‍🎤

  30. I’m pretty sure only the 1983 and 1984 Cutters had any former D-Chi’s riding for them. The 1986, 1988, and 1992 teams may have all had a former D-Chi coaching them in the pit. Cutters are proud of the D-Chi connections. Those guys that raced for D-Chi could still win today with their training program which says a lot as to how far ahead of the curve they were in terms of planning, training, and recruiting. Bill Brissman could still race and do well in Little 5 today and he graduated in 1981. Here’s a cool article from 1981 New York Times that explains their mindset.
    http://www.nytimes.com/1981/04/26/sports/indiana-s-little-500-speeds-into-the-big-time.html?pagewanted=all

      • He rode in the late 90’s and early 2000’s for us, fantastic rider and great guy, lapped the field one year by himself as well. Hope all is well Sasquatch and good job with MoBears this year, you guys looked good!

  31. Looking ahead to 2018…

On the womens side, Theta, DG, and Melanzana look to be the favorites. DG returns Coppens, L. Bignal, and Rivich from their 2017 squad, Theta looks to reload with Brown, Keaton, and Watanabe. Zana returns all riders from their 6th place team, plus the inelligible 2017 ITT champ, Brooke Hannon. I think we will see a serious drop off from SKI, AOPi, and Phi Mu, due to graduating their respective leaders.

On the Men’s side, I think it would be dumb to look at any team but the Black Keys as the favorites. Return Martinez (ITT champ, MNO finalist), Mangel (4th place ITT) as well as Noah Voyels and are replacing Hammon with MNO finalist and 12th place ITTer, Will Ottenweller. I think their biggest challengers will be SAE and Cutters. This will be Joe’s last year and the rumor is, his little brother will be a freshman next year. Add this onto the fact their rookies will be more experienced, and I think see improvements. Cutters will be without Theiry, but return Trevor Schwedland, Noble Guyon, and Patrick Coulter from their 3rd place team. Sig Ep and Gray Goat will be hurt the most by graduation

    • ITT and MNO gonna in 18. 2 champs and 2 challengers in 1 heat of TT’ing. Doin it up again pack style a coupa days lata.

    • Please stop talking about the third krahulik like he has done anything yet. There are sooo many riders more worthy of being talked about than him

      • The rumor is he’s already beating both his brothers up firehouse.
The third Krahulik is the final, most refined version of the Krahulik spawn. The most interesting storyline of 2017 is which independent team he joins in the fall before riding alongside his brother at sae.

      • Robert Krahulik will be a strong rider if he rides for SAE next year. He’ll likely be somewhere between Andy and Joe in terms of his engine and probably closer to Joe according to his IHSAA State Swimming Finals times. Joe was a 143 in the 200 Freestyle and Robert a 1:44. That’s fast, just not fast enough to get a scholarship in swimming at a big school.

  32. JETBLACH New Rider Call Out Meeting tomorrow April 29th at 12:00PM at 1431 N Jordan Ave.

For those interested in riding for JETBLACH in the 2018 Men’s Little 500, we will be holding a call out meeting. Please enter through the front door off Jordan Ave.

Tomorrow’s meeting will be hosted by our head coach Courtney Bishop and provide an opportunity to meet our returning riders and alumni, and tour our training facility.

Since 2002, the program has made 16 Little 500 appearances (as Delta Tau Delta and Team Major Taylor) and achieved 12 top 5 finishes including 2 championships in 2012 and 2016.

Come learn more about our program tomorrow.

    • OMG NO WAY THE MOST SUBPAR TEAM WITH LITTLE TO NO TALENT IS RETURNING, NO SHITS GIVEN BY ANYONE BECAUSE THEY ARE A NON-COMPETE. But seriously, total non-compete, no one marks bears and no one ever will, only way they win is if its a slow race and they hold onto the lead lap by the luck of God and everyone wrecks out and bears someone cross the line first, which won’t happen. Bears are just there as a feel good story. Sorry but beats have 0% chance to win.

  33. Prior posts have me wondering. What HS sports do you feel generally produce the best male and female Little 500 riders? Track? Swimming? Soccer? Cross Country? Etc? Lets have an actual discussion instead of trying so hard to be humorous.

    • I’d say without a doubt swimming. Speed skaters would probably be the best but it isn’t a HS sport. CC works well too as long as they build some power. Martinez is a 4:12 miler. Luke T was a pretty solid CC runner. Nick Torrance was a really good swimmer. The Krahulik’s are swimmers.
A lot of former Cutter riders were great IU swimmers doing a 5th year. Indiana swimming is super competitive and they start their training at age 4-6 and are deep into endurance training and racing by age 8 allowing them a huge advantage in terms of cardio base. Great track sprinters would also make great cycling sprinters if they keep their lap counts low enough to be fresh at the end.

    • Swimmers, cross country, and long distance track probably better for the riders to stay out on the track for lots of laps. Short distance track for sprinters. Think DG’s Doogs originally came to IU as 400 or 800 m runner. Notoriously though, sprinters don’t like any kind of distance work. Soccer players would probably bridge the gap with both endurance and speed. Funny though that IU men’s soccer entered a team back in 2008? And they ended up finishing mid to high 20’s. Regardless which sport you come from little 500 has it own unique skills. I would probably say an 800 to 1500 track runner as that is a lot of hurt.

    • If you want to talk about an interesting trend, I find it strange that sophomores/second year riders tend to perform best in ITTs. The past 4 winners have been sophomores/junior 2nd year riders, and if my memory suits me, riders like Eric Young and Hans Arnesen had their PRs in their second year of racing. I have done no research to quantify this, I was just looking through old results today, and was curious if there was an explanation behind this?

      • @thought Remember Data’s rules of thumb. It is BEST to compare head-to-head ITT performances. It is second best to compare ITT times from the same evening. Typically Sophomores do NOT race in the head-to-head heat containing the 4 fastest returning riders from the prior year. I think this is significant. There is less pressure on them than on the top 4 and, sometimes, but not always, 1 or 2 Sophs can luck into slightly better wind and track conditions. So, what current Freshman, if any, might push into the X. and Joe K. range in 2018?

      • I’ve noticed this a lot as well. If you take out all the external factors (which are several), sometimes it’s the lack of pressure facing a sophomore and sometimes it’s a more targeted training program where in their junior year and senior year, they are training harder and for longer distances. They are also trying to peak for the race and not ITT’s so may have not rested at all for ITT’s. Also, sometimes they try to train much harder after winning and it backfires a bit the next year. It happens quite a bit on the men’s side though and not very often on the women’s side.

Hans- Even though Hans PR was in his 2nd year, he was clearly a better rider his senior year.
Young- may have been a bit overreached his senior year during the spring leading up to his Pro National Championship a couple months later.
Sarah Rieke- broke the record in 2007 and then got 2nd in 2008 to the current record holder.
Kurt Gensheimer- broke the record in 1998 and then took 2nd in 1999.
Todd Smith-Beat Kurt in 1999 and then took 4th in 2000
Luke Isenbarger- Won in 2002 and took 3rd in 2003.
Sasha Land- won in 07 and took 4th in 2008 but he had a bad knee in 08.
Chris Craig was 1st in 2014 and 2nd in 2015 as well.
Thierry- 1st in 2015 and 3rd the following year
Krahulik- was likely as good or better than the year before and could handle longer TT’s compared to the previous year.

  34. Interestingly, Doogs ran the 1600 and 3,200 and was good at both. (5:11 and 11:17) She also played 4 years of HS soccer. She was also born in February which seems to be a signal of many of the best Little 5’ers.
I think her knee problems turned her into more of a sprinter.

  35. I should clarify, athletes born Jan-March have the highest representation of top athletes. Feb just seems to have a lot of good Little 5’ers.

  36. Steven Gomez has a picture of Rob Lee above his bed and a box of Kleenex with lotion on his bedside table. If you ask his wife, she has mixed feelings about it.

    • That was both random and irrelevant. Thank you phi psi for reminding people why we don’t care about you

      • It’s okay that you and the rest of BKB are still butt hurt because you couldn’t get a bid anywhere, y’all are simply a bunch of wash ups who couldn’t get a house who created BKB to make yourselves feel better about not getting a house or a bid.

      • Our house is currently held captive by Alpha Grab-A Donut, we are still on campus and we are still present waiting to take our house back, then we will wipe the floor with all the damn geeds on a single speed shit schwinn and then get hammered and play with fireworks.

      • Bro what are you doing? No one is allowed to know about our fireworks cause then we have to share and Jeremy Crawford’s mom will call the school and make us share with her Jeremy, not cool bro, very not cool bro.

  37. Top athletes being born in the first part of the year is generally because Jan 1st is the cutoff for teams in most American sports. I do know that the cut off for soccer is August, so a lot of the better players are born after August 1. Generally when the kids are young the older athletes have an advantage and the ones born later in the calendar tend to weed out sooner because of their dissadvantage.

  38. I often suspect if there are really only about 8 or 9 dudes posting on this site and maybe 20 to 30 actually reading it.
