We’ve noticed everyone has taken a liking to talking about the race. So we’re giving you a place to do that, and just that.
Feel free to use this area to discuss anything and everything about the Little 500 — Qualifications, Spring Series, the race itself.
Please, no character attacks. Trash-talking is great, but slandering people isn’t. Let’s keep it clean. Or your post will be deleted.
An interesting year with at least 4 coaches working with both a guys and girls team. Have there always been coaches that have pulled a double duty or is this a new trend?
Knapp: Theta 1st BKB 1st
Kalbfell: Melanzana 6th Gray Goat 2nd
Kirkham: Ski 5th Cutters 3rd
Bishop: TPA 14th Jetblach:17th
I will be back for a 5th year, you can thank Rachel Brown for this.
Great. I also have been working on getting back into the race. Are using your real name or coming back under an alias?
This is not real nor is it Thiery, bunch of idiots.
If it were true it would hurt their chances next year
Was Kalbfell even the coach for GG or Melanzana? I didn’t see him in either pit during the races
I was more in muffin baking role if you must know.
Well he “writes” their training plan so he’s the coach in that regard
*baked muffins
Luke copy and pasted his training plan, straight from BKB.
Wow the kid who was on BKB used the plan from BKB, thats shocking
On an actual serious note, since most of this page is all crap. Michael Chettleburg who is a very strong cyclist for BKB, a top 10 ITTer and MnO finalists with a history of performing well in the events and has a strong racing background, was never once raced by BKB. I find this sad and upsetting to see such good riders like Michael and Luke Kalbfell who would have been studs on other teams and big factors, that never got the chance because of BKB’s political bullshit. Congrats that they won but their 4th rider is no where near as strong as Will or Michael, Will is going to be a junior and will only get one race, he should have been racing since sophomore year. I hope future riders pay attention to this because they had 2 guys in chelltleburg and Kalbfell that should have raced but never got the chance, I feel horrible for Chettleburg, a great kid and someone who never got the chance and put the work in. You can thank BKB for ruining that kid’s who Little 5 experience and shit on all his work, very unfortunate and very sad.
Actually, I didn’t ride because BKB and I couldn’t settle a disagreement about our respective preferences of baked goods.
By political bullshit I think you mean picking the best choice. Seemed to work out for BKB just fine the way it happened
Definitely worked well but imagine how many times they would have lapped the field if they had been eating muffins!
It’s Chettleburgh*
-BKB
I never said it didn’t work out, I just wish he would’ve rode elsewhere since he was a strong rider and never got the chance to ride.
If you think the BKB L5 experience is defined by making a race team, think again.
BKB has won twice, congrats to you guys!!!!! OMG you “won” by everyone crashing out and luckily staying up and then actually won for real this year. BKB is not a dynasty, not even close. Win 5 more times and then we can talk. Luke was the strongest rider on campus and you didn’t race him, you probably would’ve had bette chances if politics were not involved. But hey keep on sucking up good riders and never riding them, makes like easier for every other team.
Has BKB ever said they were a dynasty? If not, why do you need to argue that they aren’t one? Cutters was a dynasty, but with their first podium finish coming this year since 2011 it’s hard to argue that they are a dynasty anymore.
What are these “politics” everyone keeps talking about? I’d love to learn those insider BKB secrets from people not on BKB!
Also, if “Luke was the strongest rider on campus” why didn’t he win ITTs? Or MNO? Doing well at Wednesday worlds doesn’t make you make you the strongest rider
It’s not like he gave Marian a run for their money all collegiate season long or anything.
I was too busy with work in the lab on the cranberry-taaka swirl muffins this year.
Let the age old argument continue (this time for someone who is extremely irrelevant to L5), being good on the road does not correlate to being good on the track. I’d be curious to see how many top 10 ITTers have great road results
@Twelve the thing is Kalbfell is a beast on anything involving 2 wheels. top 10 ITTer sophomore year and single handedly destroyed a breakaway of 5 Marians in an 80 mile road race. I heard he once smashed a bakers dozen of blueberry muffins in under 2 minutes as well. House record.
Last time I checked, BKB’s name is both engraved on the Borg Warner Trophy and listed in the Little 500 record book two times as champion. Spare me the sob story of wishing you hadn’t been boxed into an 8-up sprint because we all know YOU surely would have won if the crash didn’t happen. A win is a win; it doesn’t matter if it’s by a thousandth of a second, a lap, or circumstance, at the end of the day, BKB has won twice in four years.
In the 12 years that BKB has existed, there have been exactly two guys that have quit the team. I don’t know what sort of Trump propaganda machine you are running, but I would say that’s a pretty good track record. Luke 100% had eligibility to ride in Little 500 this year for any team that he wanted to, but instead chose to rip off the BKB training plan and help “coach” the Gray Goats to a second place finish and race to mid-pack finishes in IUCC A’s races.
With most of the guys that go through the BKB program, very few of them come in as rookie all stars. Instead, they come in with some athletic talent and BKB develops them into good riders over four years. Guys ride for BKB because they want to ride for a competitive team. The cost of riding for a competitive team is in some instances, the guys you are riding with are better than you, but at the end of the day, that’s what makes you better yourself.
First off Beta came in with young rookies and pulled in a 4th place win, second the Cutters who are competitive as well placed a solid 3rd this year with a sophomore rookie and a freshman rookie. I do not disagree with what you are saying about development but do not credit BKB’s training plan for goats success, as an alum myself I laugh at that, Goats had 3 seniors who have years of racing experience and are strong riders and you try to discredit them for supposedly using BKB’s training plan? Get a life.
How do you suppose kalbfell had eligibility? Isn’t he a cat 2 and never raced before?
@ThreeWiseMen I did not mean to discredit the Gray Goat boys. Grey Goat definitely worked their asses off and experience counts for a lot. But ask Lucas where he got the workouts he was writing for those guys this season. He doesn’t have an original or revolutionizing thought in his body no matter what board room he walks into.
@Questions He was not a Cat 2 summer of last year. He very well could have raced in 2017. Upgrading was his choice.
Luke upgraded to cat 2 last summer and had not raced little 5 which made him have 0% eligibility to race this year otherwise word on the street was he was riding as a delt. He also got 2nd place to the collegiate national champ in a collegiate race this spring which is not too shabby.
Jimmy Johns was smart enough to know the track sucked and taking the inside line early was the move as coming around late could be treacherous. Don’t know why people try to take 2014 away from bkb when they were the only team smart enough to understand that
Luke 100% was ineligible to race this season
Can we stop talking about this Kalbfell kid and go back to discussing things relevant to the race?
We could come back and entertain y’all and stir some shit up.
Please do. Anything other than what it going on.

People like to think their training plans are breakthrough material, but it’s all the same. All relevant Little 5 teams pretty much do the same thing with very little variability. BKB never had a training plan better than others’, what BKB has is people that work hard and are dedicated.
I think 4x TP and white jersey winners disagree with that statement.
Well, then they’d be wrong.
I think more teams than just BKB have riders who work hard. No doubt BKB have an incredibly deep team, and credit to them for getting and keeping those riders. Do you think that independent teams have an easier time recruiting riders, as they can recruit from a pool of thousands compared to the greeks, who can only recruit from their house, not that they might not find a rider and invite them to join?
I agree. The best training plan is base riding the crap out of any bike in the fall, and building hard on the L5 bike once you have the base. IMHO it really comes down to who put in the saddle time, who did good interval training in the spring, and who has the most grit to win the race. The best way to get better at anything is by doing that thing…this probably sounds too pragmatic but I think it’s true and anybody wanting to race in the Little 500 shouldn’t be discouraged due to lack of a brilliant training.
@Bye Felicia Dont change the subject!
Sweet Potato Muffins
For the oat based version
2 cups gluten free oat flour (gluten free oats ground into a flour)
1/2 cup granulated sweetener of choice
1 T baking powder
1 tsp cinnamon
pinch sea salt
1 cup mashed sweet potato
2 T shredded carrots (optional)
1 cup dairy free milk
1 flax egg (can sub for 1 large egg if not vegan)
1 tsp vanilla extract
6 T smooth cashew butter (can sub for any smooth nut or seed butter of choice)
Frosting (optional)
Protein frosting
Coconut frosting
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and line 10-12 muffin tins with patty pans and set aside.
In a high speed blender, combine all your ingredients and blend until a fine batter is formed. If your nut butter is not smooth enough, you may want to melt it slightly beforehand.
Divide the batter amongst the muffin tin and bake as follows- For the grain free option, you’d need 20-25 minutes (depending on your oven brand). For the oat based version, you’ll be looking at 25-30 minutes. Ensure you check by inserting a skewer and once clean, they are done.
Remove from oven and allow to cool in muffin tin for 10 minutes, before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. Once cooled, top with frosting of choice.
What kind of budgets do teams work with. Is there a limit to sponsorship, or support?
Phi Psi’s budget was about 30k but it all went to pay for the boose which is reflected by our performance on race day
Bruh no ragrats homie, we tore shit up
Yeah then the cops showed up and caught Jeremy Crawford peeing on his friend for enjoyment and the night was ruined from there homie.
I’ve heard SAE revamped their bike program/training room/equipment with 40K last year, but I don’t know that for a fact and it’s probably not the normal yearly budget even if it were true. Cycling is expensive. I’d say $3000-$10000 are normal for any given fraternity, mine is near the latter of that spectrum. I’m not sure about independent teams. The budget covers L5 bike wheel builds, repairs, rollers, fronting the cost of ordering team kits, winter break or spring break training trip expenses, and more.
Any team can attempt to gain sponsorship. Restaurants, bike shops, and businesses of alumni or family are good places to start for sponsorship. Fundraising events are also an option too.
Its obvious that SAE spends that much a year on ice cream, doughnuts, pizzas, protein powders, creatine and aminos. Mostly big but somewhat buff.
Real question: were Ross and Rachel on a break?
*Guy on airplane next to Rachel from an episode I don’t remember the name of*
“By the way, it seems to be perfectly clear that you were on a break”.
Anybody have a date for the Bloomington Crit weekend?
Any L5ers have a particularly good summer race season? Crits/ track/ road racing??
Anybody in Indy has a chance for a great race season. 12 crits, 2 road races, and many events and practices at the Major Taylor Velodrome (Indianapolis). Nebo Ridge bike shop in Carmel has fast, race pace rides every Tuesday and Thursday as well.
Any solid freshmen out there I should add to the rush list? Highest GPA on campus and a set of complimentary 303s
303s are a poor mans wheel now. We want Etap and Enves, or NSWs.
Real big boys ride stock rims with knobbies.
And pedal at 80 rpm up 10% grades getting dropped by the kids spinning it to win it
he didn’t like the organization or riding for Ryan Knapp. His roster wasn’t that good, it was just him and xav.
imagine taking xav off that team, see how bad they were. Lk can’t win a championship with those bulls
Even he isn’t that strong. What did he ride in the race? 10 laps? Maybe 15? Bulls probably could’ve won without him
I can’t believe you have the guts to hate on him like that. He took the gravel-est road!
@Billy Simmons,
You could say he took the GROAD.
In a shocking development, the third Krahulik brother forgoes his eligibility to ride for an independent team for a semester and eventually quit so he can join SAE. Reporters on the ground are “baffled that he would give up such a privilege.”
Actually, and you heard it here first, Tall Krahulik is secretly already a BKB and is simply spending the first semester with SAE before ghosting them.
*Young Pioneer
What’s the point of having a fall series if BKB is the only team that ever wins/ tries? Take away the quals time pick and let it actually be a random process in the spring. Fall and summer is for road racing anyway
If you saw the events in person it’s pretty clear other people tried, Langley won street sprints, Figg got 3rd in ITTs, and gray goat won the first lap of cyclocross
Most teams didn’t even have 1/2 of their members show up. Plus, if everybody is base training what would be the motivation to throw it out the window for 3 weeks to do the different Fall series events?
Yeah I heard BKB peaks every year for fall series. I mean come on. No way Martinez could throw that fast of an ITT down if he wasn’t gearing up for it. Ridiculous.
DRUG TEST HIM
Ehh probably not, 2:20 of hard riding is a vo2 max effort. That really is more anaerobic power than real aerobic fitness. All it means is he is gifted.
Hans’ record will be X’ed out in Spring!

Everybody is sleeping on Sig Chi. They’re much better all around than SAE.
I think Top 5 ITTs in no specific order will look like Martinez, Krahulik, Hicks, Mangel, and Guyon/Holtkamp.
What is TPA?
Sig Chi may be marginally deeper than SAE but in the end, this is going to come down to one thing: Star power. Krahulik is stronger than any EX by a significant margin. Add in Ryan Tuffnell coming back from a great summer of training on the road and velodrome and the youngest Krahulik and they can keep Joe fresh and rested for the final lap sprint.
Nobody getting away this way. BKB, you laid all of your cards on the table last spring. Flying under the radar and breaking away with 40 to go will not happen again. And this time, your lack of a true sprinter will be exposed in the group sprint.
Not sure you can say BKB “flew under the radar.” 1st place ITTs, 1st place TP. Best rider and deepest team. They blew the doors off everyone.
Sig chi may have the upper hand over SAE. Birdies are saying they’re out for blood.
bkb has got bigger problems, ie a lack of leadership and no recruits
Tuffnell is still just an above average fitness level at this point.
Sig Chi cleaned up on the only Worlds they showed up to. Between Fiore, Holtkamp, and Serf they could be pretty dangerous. Not saying SAE is bad, but Sig Chi might be better.
Holtkamp arguably is the most athletic rider in the race, and that rivals Krahulik’s star power.
Either way, this year’s race will be ultra competitive and entertaining.
Well, it’s a good thing Little 500 is raced at Worlds! /s
World’s performances don’t mean anything. Especially if Cutters, BKB, or GG and Ryan Knapp aren’t showing up. Holtkamp is not as strong as Joe. Joe was a IN crit state champion and was competing all summer at the velodrome. Being “the most athletic rider in the race” doesn’t mean shit to an ITT champion and the strongest rider in the field, with the possible exception of Xavier.
Athleticism has a lot to do with L5, that’s why Joe was great his first year.
Everybody was at this worlds besides Knapp. Both the EX guys finished in front of Martinez. They’re a top 4 contender this year, you’ll be saying it in April if you’re not saying it now. They’ve got talent and fitness. If they bite your team in the rear, don’t say nobody warned you they were dangerous.
Sig Chi showed up to damn near every Worlds in the fall and did mediocre. Plus it’s the fall…long time until April
Tito’s
Dude, quit telling people about our super secret 2018 race plan to train super extra hard before the 2018 race.
Do you think we ought to sandbag MNO again in 2018? Placing zero riders in the Semis was a clever way to lower expectations prior to finishing a lap down.
Do you still read last week’s newspaper too?
I’ve never seen so many crybabies because someone said a team is going to surprise everybody this year…
always knew sig chi was soft, but never knew it was this bad. looks like everyone’s already in their head and it’s not even April yet.
I responded to a post saying Sig Chi was better all around than SAE, and everybody loses their minds.
Haha doesn’t that make you the real snowflake? I didn’t know opinions scared you guys so much, you should’ve just said so in the first place!
PREDICTIONS
WOMEN’S RACE
1. Theta- Returning 2 from their championship team last year, including Rachel Brown. Who looked incredible during TNRS. Going to have to race 2 rookies, but Knapp has shown he can win with multiple rookies on race day teams.
2. TPA- Courtney Bishop is a Little 500 wizard. Him and Knapp are on a different tier when it comes to creating a race day strategy and executing it. Caitlin Kamplain looks like the 3rd best woman in the field so far and we know CB will find a way to keep her fresh.
3. Melanzana- Brooke is Brooke. Team that already had a great season last year added last year’s ITT champ? Yep. They’re a podium team for sure.
MENS RACE
1. BKB- Returning 3/4, including last year’s ITT champion, last year’s 4th place ITTer, and a rider who raced for Upland all summer, and one of the 2 best coaches in the game. I think they are the clear favorites
2. Cutters- Also returning 3/4 returning riders. I think Cutters advantage is going to come from having the best pure sprinter in the race in Noble Guyon. My personal prediction is that he wins ITTs this year and if this race comes down to a sprint, Cutters have it in the bag.
3. Bears- Hungriest team in the race right now. Looked very strong at fall series, and have a desire to prove themselves. Figg is one of the strongest riders in the field and could see him winning the group sprint at the end if necessary.
Nothing says “top sprinter” like not making it out of the first round of MNO!
A lot can change in 1 year. Watch and see
You’re smokin crack if u think TPA will finish on the podium from 15th last year? Just stupid, add Ski, AoPi, Teter, or anyone really. Be real.
Don’t sleep on Craig Athaide
WTF is a Craig Athaide????
lmfao at althese bottom tier riders nobody has ever heard of coming on here being like “watch out for me!” Cmon man. Let’s talk about the riders who’re actually going to be good
Road cycling does not translate to little 5 cycling that’s a fact
People sure like to talk shit on here. Anyone have an idea of which teams have some up and coming first time racers? As some people discussed, the 4th rider and make or break a team, but a exceptional 4th rider is a huge asset to a team. Is there anyone worth watching out for come Spring Series?
So truth to Jetblack / delts gone for good, or at least this year? Bishop focusing on womens race, bailing after a down year #weaksauce
JETBLACH: The Island of Misfit Riders
Zana and Bkb, all else are wasting their time!
Bkb is not as good as everyone thinks. Their workhorse from last year graduated and will ottenwielller is not going to be able to eat 70+ laps like Hammond was last year. Martinez will have to do more work and won’t be able to lead the same type of breakaway effort. This race will be a sprint between Joe, Holtkamp, Guyon, and Xavier, and I don’t exactly love Xavier’s chances based on his mno performance
Out of the 4 guys you listed martinez is 1 of the 2 that made it to the MNO final. If anything the sprint will be joe, figg, martinez. In that scenario I give it to figg
In the history of Bears/Wright when have they ever finished on the actual leaders lap? Oh yeah, never. With three returners and last year’s ITT champion, the defending champions are the team to beat.
Upsets in the Mens and Women’s races this year! Mens: Take the field over the favorites. For the women’s race, Theta Phi Alpha.

CUTTERS WIN!!!!
Who?
After celebrating with Hobie I decided to visit old Bill’s stadium. Happy to find that many of the fastest still smelled faintly of chlorine.
Wth? …what does that mean???
Chlorine—>pools—>swimmers
That I get but if it means that there’s some swimming based team that’s going to come in and have any impact on this year’s race, you’re kidding yourselves !
Nobody said anything about a swimming based team, just that many good riders have a strong swimming background.
Heard Mo Bears shoves pizza up their ass
Thin crust or deep dish?
Phi Psi sucks , as usual.
Who is looking good on the track so far on both the men’s and women’s side?
Apparently no one.
Any update on Trevor? Is Fowler just hiding him on a backwoods track getting ready for raceday?
I thought I saw those two leaving town in an F-250 dually with a bed full of cinder
Probably some BS story cutters came up with to fall back in when they don’t win.
Men and women Quals predictions?
